Bangor swimmer gains All-American honor at Penn State

Erin Thomas, a member of Bangor High’s 2008 state championship swim team, was one of seven Penn State University swimmers and divers named earlier this month by the College Swimming Coaches Association to the Division I Scholar All-American team.

Thomas, a 2012 PSU graduate, was an accomplished freestyler for the Nittany Lions in each of her four years at PSU. During her senior year, Thomas was a member of the Big Ten championship 400-meter freestyle relay and closed her career as a member of the 400 free relay which scored 11th at NCAA Division I championships.

St. Joe’s AD honored

Saint Joseph’s College Athletic Director Brian Curtin has been chosen as the 2012 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Executive of the Year.

Curtin, AD since May of 2006, has helped propel the school’s teams to a combined most overall victories (715) and highest in-conference (.688, 383-174) and overall (.623, 715-433) winning percentages of any GNAC institution.

Saint Joseph’s teams have captured 13 conference championships and advanced to the NCAA Tournament on 11 occasions during Curtin’s tenure.

Saint Joseph’s teams and athletes have also garnered numerous academic and sportsmanship honors.

“Brian Curtin leads Saint Joseph’s College Athletics with integrity, enthusiasm, and thoughtfulness,” GNAC Commissioner Joe Walsh said in a press release. “He is an asset to the conference and all of our student-athletes and is a pleasure to work with.”

USM team earns academic honor

The University of Southern Maine women’s outdoor track and field team earned another honor recently as a 2012 Division All-Academic Team by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

A total of 137 institutions earned the honor by compiling a cumulative team GPA of 3.10 or better. The Huskies outdoor team roster had a cumulative team GPA of 3.20 on a 4.00 scale.

In addition to the team honor, three USM athletes, junior Molly Carl of York, senior Hannah Patterson of Londonderry, N.H., and freshman Hannah Wiley of Arundel were among the 340 athletes representing 107 colleges and universities to be named to the USTFCCCA women’s 2012 Division III All-Academic Track & Field Team.

USM alumnae game set

University of Southern Maine field hockey coach Bonny Brown-Denico is inviting former players to participate in an alumnae game and post-event barbeque on Sunday, Aug. 26. UM to participate in College Colors Day

The University of Maine is participating in the inaugural Pledge Your Allegiance for College Colors Day spirit competition and is asking for fan support to help win the College Colors Day Spirit Cup and $10,000 toward the general scholarship fund.
