BANGOR, Maine — Dr. Georg L. Rymph, a physician at Eastern Maine Medical Center, died at the age of 44 on Monday while overseas in Sri Lanka, the hospital said Tuesday.

A memo sent to EMMC physicians Tuesday said hospital personnel have no details about Rymph’s death “other than it appeared to be peaceful, not involving accident or violence.”

Rymph, a board-certified family practice specialist, had been an inpatient care hospitalist at EMMC since 2004 after graduating from the EMMC Family Medicine Residency Program.

Rymph’s family lives in Missouri and is working with the U.S. Embassy to arrange for the return of his body to the United States, the hospital said.

Rymph, an avid bicyclist, graduated from Purdue University in Indiana before earning his medical degree in 1999 at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University in New York.

He completed his family practice residency at EMMC.
