Lighting of luminaries to benefit cancer society

BAR HARBOR — The 11th annual Carol Dyer Memorial Light the Way to a Cure Luminaria Evening to benefit the American Cancer Society will be held 7-10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, on the Bar Harbor Village Green. Rain date is Sunday, Aug. 5.

When Carol Dyer lost her battle with brain cancer in June 2001, her friends decided to channel their grief into planning an event that would honor her by giving others a fighting chance. Light the Way to a Cure is an evening to remember those who have been affected by cancer. Luminaries displaying the names of cancer victims and survivors, available for $10 each before and during the event, will illuminate the Bar Harbor Village Green as local musicians perform in the gazebo.

Light the Way to a Cure has raised more than $50,000 for the American Cancer Society since it began 10 years ago. Last year, the event raised nearly $6,000.

Luminary order forms are available at barharborybs.com. The form can be returned with a check payable to the American Cancer Society with “Carol Dyer” in the memo line. Mail to The First, P.O. Box 258, Bar Harbor 04609. Forms also are available at various local businesses. Luminaries also may be purchased at the event.
