OLD ORCHARD BEACH — Nate Boyle scattered seven hits and Shawn Francoeur hit a two-run single in the eighth inning to break the game open as Windham defeated Brewer 4-1 in a play-in game for the American Legion baseball state tournament at The Ballpark on Saturday.

The win advances Zone 4 runner-up Windham (16-6) to the double-elimination phase of the eight-team state tournament Wednesday against Zone 2 champion Post 51 of Oakland (19-2). Game time is 12:30 p.m.

Brewer, the Zone 1 runner-up, ends its season with a 12-11 record.

Windham scored a pair of unearned runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead against Brewer righthander Dennis O’Neil.

Brewer cut its deficit to 2-1 in the fourth inning. Nick Moore walked and Jordan Carter was hit by a pitch. Moore was forced out at third base on a sacrifice bunt attempt, but Carter scored for second on a Windham error.

Shawn Francoeur hit a two-run single in the eighth inning to extend Windham’s lead to three runs.

O’Neil pitched 7 ⅔ innings, striking out six batters and walking three before giving way to reliever Schuyler Van der Eb.

In Saturday’s other play-in game, Josh Martin pitched a two-hit shutout as Zone 2 runner-up Gardiner defeated Zone 5 runner-up Kennebunk 2-0.

Martin struck out 10 batters and walked just one during his complete-game effort, while Kyle Fletcher contributed an RBI single for the winners.
