BANGOR, Maine — Although construction of the Cross Insurance Center is in full swing, the thousands of people expected to come to Bass Park for the Bangor State Fair will see few changes in terms of parking and traffic patterns, Bass Park executive director Mike Dyer said Thursday.
This year’s edition of the state fair kicks off at 2 p.m. Friday and runs through 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5.
“Dutton Street will be open for walk-in [traffic] as usual. The lower Buck Street entrance will be open to walk-in [traffic] as usual,” Dyer said, adding that fairgoers arriving by vehicle can access parking via the middle entrance on Buck Street.
Dyer said, however, that because of the construction, about 230 parking spaces that used to available behind Main Street Irving and the former Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce building are not available this year.
As has been the case in past years, fairgoers can find plenty of on-street parking, Dyer said. In addition, the Pickering Square Parking lot is a short walk away from the fairgrounds.
Parking also will be available in nearby private lots, though some of those will require a fee.
“People who do choose to come to the fair should spend a few minutes and get an upfront and personal look at the Cross Insurance Center. It’s quite a sight,” Dyer said.
Among the featured attractions at this year’s state fair are the Paul Bunyan Lumberjack Show, the Big Splash Flume Ride, the Eastern Maine Camera Club Photography Show, Wolves of the World, the Eastern Maine Rabbit Breeders Association Show, A Grizzly Experience and Disc-Connected K9s, to name a few.
Other headliners include displays of motorcycle skills by FreestyleMX.com, the National Lobster Roll Eating Championship and traditional playground games by Bring Back Recess, a variety of agricultural exhibits and contests and free pony rides for children compliments of the Brown Family Farm.
A variety of midway rides, vendors and concessions also will be available.
