ORLANDO, Fla. — The Maine Athletic Club completed its run at the AAU Eighth-Grade Basketball National Tournament on Wednesday morning with a 56-41 loss to a team from Maryland.
The Hampden-based team, which had gone 2-1 in pool play to advance to the medal rounds, went 1-2 in medal-round play to finish its run in the 104-team event with a 3-3 record.
The Maryland team, also 1-1 in medal play entering Wednesday’s contest, led MAC 12-10 after the first quarter and 23-19 at intermission before building as much as a 12-point second-half advantage.
The Maine team then rallied to within a single point before Maryland pulled away again in the fourth quarter.
Conar Moore led MAC with 14 points, while Tom Coyne scored 11, Brendan McIntyre had 10, Jake Black had four points and Nick Gilpin and Riley Robinson scored two points each. Nick Chasse added two key steals during MAC’s third-quarter comeback.
MAC dropped a 64-31 decision in medal-round play Tuesday evening to a team from Ohio that has gone on to advance to the national quarterfinals in the division.
Ohio jumped out to a 16-1 lead in the game’s first three minutes, and while MAC closed to within 18-7 by the end of the opening quarter the Ohioans defense proved to be the deciding factor.
