CORINTH, Maine — Max McHugh, who led the Central High School girls basketball and soccer teams to state Class C championships last season, cracked a bone in her tibia playing in a recent summer league basketball game, but she is hoping to miss just one soccer game.

She is currently wearing a protective boot on her right leg, the same leg that suffered a broken fibula during a basketball game her sophomore year.

McHugh scored a team-high 39 goals last fall, including the game-winner in the second overtime of the 2-1 win over St. Dominic of Auburn, as the Red Devils won their school’s first soccer title. She followed that up with two late free throws as Central claimed the basketball title with a 40-39 triumph over defending state champ Hall-Dale.

McHugh, who suffered the injury three weeks ago, will be a senior.

“I was going in for a layup. I beat one defender but another girl stepped in to help out and her knee hit my shin,” said McHugh, who was playing in the Bangor High School summer league against Dexter. “I knew it was broken when it happened.”

She was in a full-length cast but that has been removed and replaced with the boot. She also is using crutches.

“I feel a lot better,” said McHugh. “I’m hoping to be able to walk without the crutches next week.”

She considers herself fortunate.

“It didn’t break all the way through and I didn’t need surgery. I’m pretty happy I’ll still be able to play my senior year,” said McHugh. “I’ll miss the first game but I’m hoping to be back the next weekend.”
