Comments for: Proponents pushing for a return to street cars in Portland

    The reference to Portland, OR transit is a little misleading. The system relies on three counties to help fund their little choo choo. There are over 1.5 million people to count on. They are in the red and have cut back service and raised fares. If you have a business in their tri-county area you pay an employee tax whether your employees use it or not.  Tri-Met is the name of the  bus service and MAX is their rail line. Before you guys decide to jump in find out where the future monies will come from.

    Once tracks are laid you can’t reroute them. Over here winters are pretty mild but if you have severe or worse weather it will hamper how often they will be able to run.

    One of the major issues over here is some of our politicians want to bring lite-rail over to our side of the river in Vancouver, WA. After seeing how the system is run over the bridge we do not want it. Our county has less than half a million people. That is not near enough too help support operation and maintenance.

    Please check out three newspapers in our area to see the real story. They are The Oregonian, The Columbian and The Willamette Weekly. The Willamette Weekly has done exposes on mismanagement of Tri- Met and MAX. And make darn sure your local politicians are kept in check with with spending your money on follies like this. It seems that all politicians are drawn to bright shiny things. They seem to forget that the money they spend is yours.

    Here’s a clue. With a little research you will find the cost per mile is grossly understated.

      Absolutely, use’s air right of way; can ‘snake’ through urban corridors; is weatherproof; can even be fully automated; runs on electric whose lines can be embedded in the supports; and whose cars can be build by Bombardier at Brunswick’s Town landing.

      Unfortunately, Donovan dotes on the impractical and is a ‘do it my way’ autocrat. His goal is to buy up property along rail lines he helps get started and profit…….just the way railroad companies once prospered and the way the Downeaster got lobbying support from banks who owned industrial land along tracks in danger of getting abandoned.

  • Hey, why not, they worked for nearly a century in Portland. I just read that more and more people in the city are ditching their cars for public transit anyway.
