PEMBROKE, Maine — Three people were hospitalized Tuesday morning after a car and pickup truck collided just west of Pembroke on U.S. Route 1.

Maine State Police Trooper Reid Bond said the westbound car driven by Joan Smith, 65, of Cherryfield crossed the centerline and collided with a pickup truck driven by George Preston, 52, of Pembroke. The accident was reported just after 8 a.m.

Smith was transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, which had no information on her condition late Tuesday afternoon.

Preston and a passenger in Smith’s car, Jessie Reese, 39, of Machias, were transported to Down East Community Hospital in Machias to be treated for what Bond described as less serious injuries.

Bond said it appeared Smith and Reese were wearing seat belts, while Preston was not.
