Acadian, Bangor all-stars to battle for state Junior League title Tuesday at Mansfield


BANGOR — Brendan Sprague’s one-out RBI single capped a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh that gave Acadian a 5-4 elimination-game win over Scarborough in the state Junior League all-star baseball tourney Monday at Mansfield Stadium.

The victory put the Acadian all-stars into Tuesday’s state championship round against Bangor at 5:30 p.m.

Acadian of the Bar Harbor area must beat Bangor twice to claim the title in the double-elimination tourney. The if-necessary game would be played after the first game.

Sprague’s fourth single of the game scored Tanner Bickford from third with the winning run.

Thomas Paola led off the seventh with a double and scored on Dylan Collin’s RBI single. Bickford doubled, putting runners at second and third. Seth Young’s sacrifice fly scored Collin to tie the game before Sprague’s game- winning hit.

Collin pitched a complete game, allowing four runs, two earned, on seven hits while walking three and striking out three. Ryan Bender also had two singles.

Scarborough’s Jackson Coutts had two singles and two RBIs and Nick Lorello added two singles.

Baseball, State 11-12

Waldo 4, Coastal 0

At Bar Harbor, Joey Danna and Connor Kneeland combined on a three-hit shutout to lift District 2 champ Waldo County by D1 champ Coastal 4-0 in an elimination game of the state Little League all-star baseball tourney for ages 11-12.

Waldo, now 2-1, moved on to another elimination game at 4 p.m. Tuesday while Coastal of the Blue Hill area finished at 1-2.

Danna walked only one and struck out nine in five innings of work for Waldo and Kneeland came on to close in the sixth, striking out one.

A combination of back-to-back singles by Emmett Shell and Colby Furrow, two errors and an RBI single by Chris Evans accounted for Waldo’s four-run fourth inning. Shell and Furrow each finished with two singles.

Taylor Schildroth also had a solid pitching effort for Coastal as he struck out five and gave up only one earned run. Schildroth, Jacob Keena and Stefan Simmons each singled.
