WALDOBORO, Maine — Maine State Police said one man is dead and a woman is being treated for gunshot wounds after a shooting Monday morning inside a home on Friendship Road.

Dead is Norman P. Benner, 32, of Waldoboro, according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland

Arlene Lawless, 25, of Waldoboro initially was taken to Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta and then transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland, McCausland said. He said investigators are optimistic that she will survive her injuries.

The shootings were reported about 9:30 a.m. at a home at 2177 Friendship Road, also known as Route 220, when family members of the dead man went to the house to check on his well-being.

Benner and Lawless rented the home and shared it with the owner, Jeremy McPhee, McCausland said.

McCausland said investigators do not think that anyone else is involved in the shootings.

A team of state police detectives is working with the Waldoboro Police Department and Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office deputies to investigate the circumstances of the shooting.

No one had been charged as of Monday evening. McCausland said investigators hope to be able to interview Lawless on Tuesday.
