BERWICK, Maine — A petition seeking to recall Selectman Robert Crichton has been generated by Berwick resident Oscar Stone and currently displayed for signatures at his real estate agency at 48 School Street.

“Yes, there is a recall petition,” Stone confirmed over the phone Thursday. “And it’s simple, he’s not doing the job he’s supposed to be doing.” Last February, three members of the Board of Selectmen were recalled from their positions.

Two hundred verifiable signatures of town residents must be made to the petition before a recall vote can be considered.

Specifically, Stone cited the ongoing Bateman fiasco as a primary reason for creating the petition.

At the Board of Selectmen’s last meeting on July 17, Stone urged Crichton to come forward and admit to any illegal meetings or activities he had engaged in during previous dealings with the construction company.

“He needs to say, ‘Gee, I made a mistake,’ and admit wrongdoing,” Stone said. “Whether these mistakes were intentional or accidental, he needs to come forward.”

“If he doesn’t want to do the job he needs to resign,” Stone said, before adding he was very disappointed with Crichton, who he’s known for a long time.

Crichton did not return a call seeking comment.
