Dirigo, Waldo County record state Little League all-star wins


BAR HARBOR — Dirigo and Waldo County each recorded opening victories in the state Little League all-star baseball tourney for ages 11-12 Fridays.

District 5 champion Dirigo beat D3 champ Hermon 16-3 and D2 champ Waldo topped D4 champ East Biddeford 6-1.

Dirigo will now take on D1 champ Coastal of Blue Hill on 12:30 p.m., followed by a 3 p.m. matchup between Waldo and D6 champ Scarborough.

Hermon and Biddeford now must battle their way back through the losers bracket as Hermon will play on Sunday at 9 a.m. against the Waldo-Scarborough loser and Biddeford will battle Coastal-Dirigo loser at noon.

A winners bracket game is also scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Sunday between the two winners of Saturday’s games.

The double-elimination tourney then continues with elimination games on Monday and Tuesday, both at 4 p.m., followed by the championship round on Wednesday and the if-necessary game on Thursday, both also at 4 p.m.

In Friday’s first game, Noah Bonsant paced the Dirigo victory as he recorded three doubles, a single and five RBIs. Jake Hendsbee chipped in with a two-run home run to back up starting pitcher, who struck out eight.

Ryan Hoogterp, Zachary Nash and Connor Magliozzi each contributed an RBI single for Hermon.

In the second game, Liam Cail sparked Waldo with an RBI double. Emmett Shell and Colby Furrow each added two singles and winning pitcher Shell went five innings, striking out eight.

Curtis Petit doubled for East Biddeford and Nick Plante added two singles.

All-star baseball and softball games should be reported to the BDN via email to: bdnsports@bangordailynews.com

Coaches are required to list information for both teams, with first and last names of players. Info should include key highlights and stats for leading hitters and pitchers.

Linescores may also be included.

The game result should be emailed as soon as possible on the day it is played.

The host team is responsible for reporting games.

Brewer 11, Penquis 8

At Dover Foxcroft, Brewer finished its season with a win to secure the No. 3 seed in the Zone 1 tournament.

Penquis cut the Brewer lead to 9-8 in the bottom of the sixth but it was too little too late as Brewer added two more in the top of the ninth to take the win.

Brewer was paced by Jordan Carter with two singles and a double for two RBIs. Nick Moore chipped in with two doubles and Tyler French had a single and a double.

Penquis was led by Kevin Leary with a single, double and two RBIs. Dylan Graffam, David Lord, and Cody Caruso all chipped in with two hits.

Penquis finishes at 6-12 and will face Hampden in the play-in game 7 p.m. Sunday at Husson University in Bangor.

Bangor 7, Hampden 4

At Mansfield Stadium in Bangor, the Comrades beat the Riverdogs to secure the No. 1 seed in the Zone 1 tourney.

Bangor’s Justin Courtney earned the win after throwing 96 pitches in 6 ⅔ innings as Bangor finished at 16-2 and Hampden at 9-9 for the No. 4 seed.

The winner of the Hampden-Penquis play-in game on Sunday will play Bangor at 7 p.m. Monday, after the 4 p.m. game between No. 3 Brewer and No. 2 Motor City.

Christian Corneil paced Bangor with two singles and an RBI. Tyler LaPlante added two singles and a sacrifice fly while Dylan Morris, Nic Cota and Bryan Rouleau each added an RBI single.

Matt Palmer tripled, doubled and singled to spark Hampden. Will Perkins added a two-run single and Shawn Smith doubled.
