Game wardens find missing hiker near Snow Mountain Pond

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

ALDER STREAM TOWNSHIP, Maine — An elderly hiker was found late Thursday evening on Snow Mountain in Lincoln County after he did not return to a local fish and game club when expected.

Cpl. John MacDonald of the Maine Warden Service said in a statement that Rudy Graf, 79, of Newcastle left the Megantic Fish and Game Club in Seven Ponds Township around 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

When Graf did not return when expected, a club employee hiked to the summit of Snow Mountain and back but did not locate Graf, according to MacDonald.

Game wardens were called for help, and Wardens Scott Stevens and Kris MacCabe headed up the trail from Alder Stream Township, joined by two club employees of the club.

Graf was found on a ridge near Snow Mountain Pond, according to MacDonald. He had made a fire after realizing he had taken the wrong trail back down the mountain. Graf was in good condition when he was found, with proper clothing keeping him warm.
