BANGOR, Maine — A Bangor man who forced his way into an acquaintance’s Ohio Street apartment and made himself comfortable on the couch was ultimately arrested after he assaulted the tenants, police said.

Joshua McAuliffe, 31, is facing charges of assault and burglary stemming from the July 12 incident, according to Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards.

McAuliffe is a boxer in the Bangor area who embarked on a professional career in 2010. He has four Golden Gloves Northern New England tournament titles to his credit, the last coming in 2010.

Edwards said the female renter and her boyfriend were inside the apartment when a drunken McAuliffe came to the door.

“He forced his way in and sat on the couch,” the sergeant said. “When he got there he was under the influence. They told him to get out.”

One of the occupants attempted to pull McAuliffe off the couch after calling police, Edwards said, but the suspect resisted, resulting in a scuffle.

Bangor police Officer Brent Beaulieu arrived and arrested McAuliffe. He was booked into the Penobscot County Jail and later released on bail.

McAuliffe served 30 days in jail on an assault charge 2000, according to Bangor Daily News archives.
