Pingree announces $2 million grant for Portland-area buses

By Seth Koenig, BDN Staff

PORTLAND, Maine — U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-Maine, announced Wednesday that the Greater Portland Metro bus service has been awarded $2 million in federal grant money to replace aging buses.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s State of Good Repair program grant is enough to replace five of the service’s buses, according to Pingree’s announcement.

“This will be a big help as Metro seeks to replace aging buses,” said Pingree in a statement. “With gas prices the way they are, this kind of investment in public transportation is critical. More and more people these days are looking for opportunities to leave their car at home and Metro helps make that happen. This federal funding will help Metro buy new buses so it can maintain service without extra costs for local taxpayers.”
