AUBURN, Maine — Three children and two adults were taken to local hospitals for treatment of injuries suffered in a two-car accident on Veterans Bridge just before 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Auburn police Lt. Anthony Harrington said the crash occurred at 2:45 p.m. when a 1995 Buick sedan driven by Helen Hammond, 90, of Auburn turned left into oncoming traffic on Veterans Bridge and hit a 2000 Chrysler sedan driven by Alisha Turner, 30, of Lewiston.

Harrington said both women and three children in Turner’s vehicle, ages 11, 6 and 5, were taken to area hospitals with injuries not considered life-threatening.

Hammond was eastbound on Veterans Bridge heading from Auburn into Lewiston, Harrington said, when she suddenly crossed or turned into the westbound lane just before the median. She hit the westbound vehicle driven by Turner, who was coming across the bridge from Lewiston.
