Paola leads Acadians to District 1 Junior League title, state tourney up next

BAR HARBOR — Thomas Paola scattered seven hits and walked only one while aiding his own cause with a two-run double and sacrifice fly as the Acadians All-Stars beat Ellsworth 8-2 to capture the District 1 Junior League baseball title and advance to the state tournament next weekend at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor.

Ellsworth scored a run in the top of the first on a Conor Maguire double and Cooper Henderson’s sacrifice fly, but the inning ended when Tanner Bickford made an over-the-head one-handed catch off a deep fly by Nick Bagley.

The Acadians answered with five runs in the second on five hits including Paola’s two-run double. In the Ellsworth half, Dakota Chipman singled in Charlie Libby. That was it for scoring for Ellsworth, as Paola didn’t allow a runner beyond first the rest of the game.

Ryan Bender sparked the 4-0 Acadians with a single, double and stole home. Riley Swanson chipped in with two singles and drove in two runs while Seth Young added two doubles. Simon Hulbert and Aaron Snurkowski each notched two singles with Hulbert driving in a run. Dylan Collin added a double.

For 2-2 Ellsworth, Dakota Chipman and Henderson each added singles with Chipman driving in a run.

The game ended after six innings because of darkness after experiencing delays due to thunder and lightning.
