Penquis Legion team upsets Bangor; Bangor, Brewer Juniors advance

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Casey Jordan and Cody Caruso combined on a two-hitter Thursday afternoon as Penquis beat Bangor 3-1 in a Zone 1 American Legion baseball contest.

Caruso worked 3 1/3 innings of scoreless ball to earn the win in relief of Jordan, who allowed one hit and a run in 3 2/3 innings. Kevin Leary’s two-run, ground-rule double in the fourth inning snapped a 1-1 tie and provided the margin of victory for 5-10 Penquis.

Caruso provided a run-scoring groundout after singles by Ryan Rebar and Dylan Graffam and a walk to David Lord.

Nic Cota recorded both hits for 13-2 Bangor, which slipped into second place behind Motor City. Starter Justin Treadwell took the loss for the Comrades.

Bangor, Brewer advance

At Mansfield Stadium in Bangor, Bangor and Brewer recorded victories in the losers bracket to set up an elimination-game showdown Saturday at 4 p.m. in the District 3 Junior League All-Star tourney.

Bangor eliminated Hampden 10-6 and Brewer ousted Old Town 4-0. Bangor is now 2-1, Brewer is 3-1 and Hampden and Old Town each finished at 1-2.

The Bangor vs. Brewer game will follow a 1 p.m. Saturday matchup between Hermon and Holbrook. The loser of that game will face the Bangor-Brewer winner on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

On Thursday, Bangor scored six runs after the first batter was retired in the top of the seventh to rally after Hampden had taken a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth.

Nick Moore hit an RBI single to tie the game, Ryan Moore also had an RBI single in the inning and Bangor was aided by four walks.

Trevor Delaite picked up the win in relief, going 1 ⅔ innings and allowing no runs on one hit while striking out three. Delaite also had a double, two singles, and two RBIs.

Hampden’s Jackson Gilmore had two singles and two RBIs and Ben Huston singled twice.

In the second game, Brewer’s Kyle St. Thomas pitched 6 1/3 innings and didn’t allow a run while scattering four hits, walking three and striking out five to earn the win.

St. Thomas also led the offense with a triple, single, and an RBI. Jacob Currier doubled.

Old Town’s Ben Quimby had two singles.
