MILLINOCKET – Ruth Leah (Buchanan) LeGassey, 92, died peacefully July 12, 2012, in her home. She was born Sept. 15, 1919, in Old Town, one of seven children born to William and Jennie (Spinney) Buchanan.
Mrs. LeGassey attended school in Milford and Millinocket, and graduated from Old Town High School in 1938.
She also graduated from Knox County General Hospital School of Nursing in 1943. She took advanced courses at the University of Maine. She was a communicant of St. Andrews Episcopal Church and Guild, a former member of Maine State Nurses Association, M.E.A. and M.A.R. Mrs. LeGassey worked in a hospital setting for many years. The last of her working career was spent as a school nurse for Millinocket School System. She also helped her husband run their flying service, Millinocket Lake Flying Services, for 30 years.
She was the wife of Eugene J. LeGassey, who predeceased her in 1991. She was a loving and giving mother and grandmother. She loved reading, music, dancing and games, and had many friends.
She is survived by three children, Jane Bouchard and her husband, Tom, Ernest "Chip" and his wife, Joy, and Judy Moore and her husband, David; seven grandchildren, Lisa Gelder and her husband, Jay, Rachel Bouchard, Jennifer Bouchard, Joshua Moore and his wife, Candice, Ryan Moore and his wife, Brandi, Kimberly LeGassey and Kenneth LeGassey; four great-grandchildren, Justin and Lindsey Gelder and Olivia and Isabel Adkins; many nieces and nephews, who gave her a lot of love, especially a very special niece, Joan Cote and her husband, George. She was predeceased by her five brothers and a sister.
Per Mrs. LeGassey’s wishes, there will be no calling hours.
Graveside memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 17, at Millinocket Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a scholarship will be established in Mrs. LeGassey’s name at Stearns High School for a nursing student.
