SOUTH THOMASTON, Maine — Nomination papers will be available Monday for the town’s sole seat on the local school board.
The nomination papers can be picked up at the municipal office building. The deadline for filing papers is Aug. 7.
A special town meeting has been scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, for the election of the town’s representative to the Regional School Unit 13 board. The Board of Selectmen used to have the authority to appoint replacements to the school board when vacancies occurred but Northgraves said voters enacted an ordinance a few years ago to require people to take out nomination papers for seats on such local boards.
The seat became vacant last week when Eric Schenk resigned. Schenk said he was disillusioned with the divisiveness on the school board during the search for a school superintendent but stressed he was not being critical of the other members.
The person elected at the Aug. 21 town meeting will serve through March 2014.
