HODGDON, Maine — A house and a barn on Barton Road were destroyed by fire Thursday afternoon.

Chief Royce Quint of the Hodgdon Volunteer Fire Department said the call came in around 5 p.m., and by the time crews arrived, the barn was destroyed.

“When we got there the barn was just flat,” Quint said Friday. The house fire also was well under way and “we decided not to go in.”

Quint said windy conditions spread the flames into the attic area of the house, fully engulfing the structure.

“We have no idea how it got started,” he said. “There’s nothing left there. We could’ve tried to put it out, but I didn’t think it was worth the risk.”

Barton Road is a dirt road located in the eastern end of Hodgdon. Quint said the property, which was not insured, was owned by Willie Heatherington. Nobody was living in the home and there were no animals in the barn, Quint added.

Fire officials from Linneus assisted at the scene, Quint said. He added since the fire started in the barn, it’s unlikely officials will be able to determine a cause.

“I’m thinking we’re not going to know,” he said.

Houlton Ambulance officials were on standby, according to Quint, but their services weren’t needed at the scene.
