VASSALBORO, Maine — Alice Hwang, who golfs out of Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono, captured the Junior Division of the New England Women’s Golf Association Championship with a three-round total of 250 Wednesday at Natanis Golf Course.
Hwang pulled away for the victory by posting a final-round score of 6-over par 78 as she showed off consistent improvement on the course after opening with a 91 Monday, followed by an 81 Tuesday.
Rounding out the top three in the Junior Division were Nikki Liucci of Tower Ridge CC with a 253 and Sarah Hansen of Val Halla GC with a 265.
Kristen MacDonald of Thomson Country Club in Connecticut won the overall individual title as she closed with a 4-over 76 for a three-round total of 6-over 222.
MacDonald’s strong start paid dividends as she was the only golfer to record an under-par round, 1-under, on Monday. She followed with a 3-over par Tuesday.
Samantha Morrell of Laurel Lane CC (R.I.) finished second in the tourney with a 223, as she displayed consistent rounds of 74, 75 and 74. Pam Kuong of Charles River CC (Mass.) finished third at 231 and also won the Senior Division. Jen Holland of Lyman Orchards GC (Conn.) finished tied for fourth with Katie Partridge of Wintonbury Hills GC (Conn.) at 233.
Emily Bouchard of Biddeford Saco CC was the top Maine finisher as she recorded a 243 and tied for 14th. Leslie Gunther of Norway CC was the next highest Maine finisher as she tied for 18th with a 244 while Hwang was the third Maine finisher and tied for 22nd overall.
Connecticut won the New England team title with 648 points and was followed by Rhode Island (649), Massachusetts (658), Maine (659), New Hampshire (684) and Vermont (671).
