Scarborough downs Hermon for state LL softball title

BAR HARBOR — Scarborough rolled to a 9-1 victory over Hermon to secure the ages 11-12 softball state championship Wednesday.

A three-run triple by Laura Powell highlighted a five-run third inning that propelled District 6 champion Scarborough past the District 3 champs.

Scarborough will represent Maine in regional play in Bristol, Conn.

Scarborough pitcher Chloe Griffin had a two-run triple and scored twice, and she struck out eight while allowing only two hits and walking three. Abbie Murrell added two singles and two RBIs.

Lauren Plissey singled with one out in the sixth to end Griffin’s no-hit bid, and Hailey Perry scored her with a single to end the shutout.

Acadians 5, Ellsworth 0

At Ellsworth, Tanner Bickford combined with Seth Young on a three-hit shutout as the Acadians of Bar Harbor beat Ellsworth to improve to 3-0 in the District 1 playoffs.

Bickford spaced three hits with four strikeouts in five innings and Young worked two hitless innings in relief.

Bickford also knocked in two runs with two singles, while Young and Brendan Sprague added a single each.

Conor Maguire singled and stole a base to pace 1-1 Ellsworth, while Nick Bagley and Alex Braley each posted a single to support losing pitcher Hunter Cote.

Hermon 3, Bangor 2

At Mansfield Stadium in Bangor, Eric Hoogterp picked up the win for Hermon, allowing only one run on five hits while striking out five in five innings.

Hermon (2-0) scored two runs in the second inning on Hoogterp’s leadoff triple followed by RBI singles by Connor Farmer and Corbin Sherman. Farmer and Sherman each had a second single in the game.

Bangor (1-1) was led by doubles from Peter Kemble and losing pitcher Ryan Brookings. Brian Peirce provided an RBI single.

Bangor West 7, Old Town 4

At Old Town, the Bangor West all-stars rallied from a three-run deficit to score twice in the fifth and four times in the sixth to earn the win over Old Town.

Alex McKenny sparked Bangor West with a double, a single and two RBIs. Payton Campbell stung a two-run double and Dominick Rossignol belted a solo home run to support winning pitcher Gary Farnham, who struck out eight.

Ethan Stoddard paced Old Town with a home run, a single and two RBIs. Hunter Brasslett posted a double, a single and an RBI and Brett Perkins contributed two singles.

Hampden 5, Brewer 4

At the VFW Field in Hampden, Cole Tweedie singled three times and earned the win on the mound as the Hampden all-stars beat Brewer.

Casey Sudbeck stroked two singles and Nick Lorenzo added a single for the winners.

Josh Pelligrino and Evan Andrews hit singles for Brewer.

D3 baseball, 9-10

Hampden-Newburgh 16, Hermon 9

At Hampden, Rece Poulin singled three times and drove in two runs to help Hampden-Newburgh earn the District 3 ages 9-10 all-star championship with a victory over Hermon.

Hampden-Newburgh advances to the state tournament, which begins Saturday in Scarborough.

Alex Mahoney singled twice and plated three runs for the winners, while Gavin Partridge and Jonah Roberts each had an RBI. Mychal Beaulieu earned the pitching win in relief.

Hermon was led by Keith Pomeroy with an RBI double. Nate Allain added an RBI single and Ryan Mailloux singled.
