Hermon softball stars advance to state championship round

BAR HARBOR — Hermon collected its third straight victory in the state Little League All-Star softball tourney for ages 11-12 with a 6-2 elimination-game verdict over South Lewiston Tuesday.

Hermon advanced to Wednesday’s championship round against Scarborough in the double-elimination tourney. Hermon, which is 3-1, needs to defeat unbeaten Scarborough twice to capture the state title. Scarborough is 2-0.

After losing to South Lewiston 8-5 in the tourney opener on Friday, Hermon has posted three straight wins as it has battled through the losers bracket.

In Tuesday’s game, Alexis MacManus scattered five hits and two runs to earn the victory for the Hermon stars. She aided her own cause with an RBI single and scored a run. Hailey Perry chipped in with a single and a sacrifice fly.

Jordan Mynahan laced an RBI double for South Lewiston.

The state tourney features the six district champions: District 1, Ellsworth; District 2, Rockland; District 3, Hermon; District 4, Biddeford; District 5, South Lewiston; and District 6, Scarborough.

The tourney results from Friday through Tuesday are: South Lewiston 8, Hermon 5; Biddeford 22, Rockland 1; South Lewiston 20, Ellsworth 2; Scarborough 10, Biddeford 0; Hermon 7, Biddeford 0 (Biddeford eliminated); Ellsworth 14, Rockland 13 (Rockland eliminated); Scarborough 15, South Lewiston 3; Hermon 11, Ellsworth 1 (Ellsworth eliminated); and Hermon 6, South Lewiston 2 (South Lewiston eliminated).

Acadians 4, Coastal 3

At Bar Harbor, Ezra Johnson singled home the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift the Acadians to victory over Coastal.

Seth Clark pitched 4 2/3 innings of no-hit ball with 11 strikeouts and five walks for the winners. Nick Stanley doubled and scored a run and Drew Rich singled and scored.

Bryce Harmon singled and plated two runs for Coastal. Stefan Simmons doubled and came around to score. Jake Keenan allowed three hits, three runs and five walks with eight strikeouts in four innings.

Ellsworth 13, Machias 0

At Ellsworth, four pitchers combined on a one-hitter as Ellsworth shut out Machias in a mutual all-star tournament opener.

Nick Bagley stroked a triple and a single and knocked in four runs to pace the Ellsworth offense, while Cooper Henderson and Hunter Cote each hit two singles with two RBIs. Alex Braley doubled and singled.

Ben Lee earned the win on the mound with 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief and two strikeouts. Cote, Jason Crossman and Brian Awalt were the other pitchers.

Ian Currier singled in the first inning to pace Machias behind losing pitcher Damon Barker.

Hampden 23, Holbrook 0

At Hampden, Casey Sudbeck knocked in eight runs with two home runs and a triple and also earned the win on the mound as Hampden won in four innings.

Nick Lorenzo rapped a double and four singles, Tyler Knights posted a double and three singles and Cole Tweedie hit a home run and two singles for the winners.

Joe Murphy led Holbrook with a double.

Hampden 14, Sebasticook 4

At Mansfield Stadium in Bangor, Hampden sent 11 batters to the plate, scoring eight runs in the bottom of the second inning to break open the game and eliminate Sebasticook.

Hampden, now 1-1, was led by Billy Campbell’s two singles. Andrew Gendreau and Jackson Gilmore chipped in with RBI singles.

Sebasticook’s Mike Massow had two singles and two RBIs.

At Mansfield Stadium in Bangor, Brewer sent 16 batters to the plate in the top of the first inning, scoring 11 runs on seven hits, four walks, and three Houlton errors.

Matt Pushard had a triple, double, and three RBIs in the inning. He also later had a single with another RBI.

Jacob Currier chipped in with a double, single and two RBIs and Alex Brooks singled twice.

Houlton’s Parker Brewer had an RBI double. Nick Cowperthwaite, Billy Phillips, and Jacob Worthly contributed with a single each.

Hermon 9, Old Town 6

At Hampden, Hermon advanced to the championship game with the victory over Old Town. Hermon will face Hampden at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Adam Rush led the offense for Hermon with a single and a two-run triple in Hermon’s six-run sixth inning.

Keith Pomeroy and Isiah Gage chipped in with two RBIs apiece for the winners.

For Old Town, Jacob Cyr had an RBI double, Jayden Dana added two RBIs, and Jamen Neptune had a triple.
