Man wounded in Orneville Township incident remains in serious condition

ORNEVILLE TOWNSHIP, Maine — A 54-year-old man remained in serious but stable condition at a Bangor hospital as Maine State Police on Monday continued their investigation into an apparent fight in which he was wounded.

Blaine Leveille of Orneville suffered a gunshot wound during what state police said was an altercation early Friday night at his home at 62 McCorrison Road, Lt. Christopher Coleman said Monday.

The other man involved, Richard A. Bennett, 64, of Atkinson, has given investigators statements regarding his version of what happened, which police want to check against statements they hope to get from Leveille, Coleman said.

Leveille’s version of events “is a crucial piece to the puzzle. We need to speak to him to see what his account is to see who might be at fault,” Coleman said Monday.

Leveille is “not in a specific position to talk,” Coleman said.

State police and Piscataquis County sheriff’s deputies were called to Leveille’s home shortly after 5 p.m. Friday. Leveille was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where he remains, Coleman said.

A supervisor at the sheriff’s office referred comment on the matter to state police. State police typically handle serious felony cases.

Six to eight detectives combed the area near the Leveille home seeking witness statements and other corroborative evidence last weekend, Coleman said. One or two detectives remained on the case on Monday.

Coleman declined to discuss the extent of Leveille’s wounds, whether they resulted from an accidental discharge of a weapon, what sort of weapon wounded Leveille or whether police found it.

McCorrison Road, which is about 6 miles long, connects with Summit and Anderson roads near Route 11 and travels through Orneville Township, which is south of Milo and east of Atkinson in southeast Piscataquis County.
