Hermon, Holbrook advance with Junior League baseball tourney victories


BANGOR — Four teams will seek to stay alive in the District 3 Junior League All-Star baseball tourney with elimination games scheduled Tuesday at Mansfield Stadium.

Hampden will battle Sebasticook at 5 p.m. while Brewer will take on Sebasticook at 7:30 p.m. in the tourney for ages 13-14.

In Wednesday’s winners’ bracket, Bangor will play Hermon at 5 p.m., followed by Holbrook against Old Town at 7:30 p.m.

Hermon, Old Town win

At Mansfield Stadium in Bangor on Saturday, Hermon used a four-run fourth to beat Houlton 4-3 and Old Town received a strong pitching performance from Kaleb Gifford to defeat Sebasticook 12-2 in mutual tourney openers.

In the day’s first two games, Bangor blanked Orono-Veazie 10-0 and Holbrook beat Brewer 15-7.

Hermon scored four runs in the top of the fourth on four hits after the first two batters struck out to begin the inning. Braeden Williams and Sam Azevedo each had two-run singles in the inning.

Tyler Beaton picked up the win, pitching four innings and allowing four runs, three unearned, on five hits and striking out seven. Nick Guerette pitched three hitless, scoreless innings to notch the save.

Houlton was led by Jacob Worthly and Sam Horton who each had an RBI single.

For Old Town, Gifford pitched six innings allowing only two runs, one earned, on two hits, while walking two and striking out 13. Old Town’s offense was led by Cole Daniel with two singles and an RBI, Nick Magoon with two singles and Kaleb Gifford’s double.

Ray Girroe had an RBI single for Sebasticook and Mike Massow chipped in with a single.

Holbrook, Brewer post wins

At Mansfield Stadium in Bangor, Holbrook’s Alex Maxsimic threw 3 2/3 innings of one-hit relief allowing no runs while striking out seven without a walk to pick up the win as Holbrook beat Hampden 15-6 in Sunday’s first game.

Brewer eliminated Orono-Veazie 18-6 in the second game.

Holbrook is now 2-0, Brewer is 1-1, Hampden is 0-1 and Orono-Veazie is 0-2.

Holbrook’s offense was paced by Maxsimic who had a triple, two singles and an RBI. Cole Bouchard chipped in with a double and two singles and Jackson Rhodes-Doyle had two singles and two RBIs. Danny Davis contributed with two singles and an RBI and Austin Pagnozzi tripled.

Jordan Dysart had two singles and two RBIs for Hampden.

In the second game, Brewer sent 12 batters to the plate, scoring eight runs on five hits in the bottom of the third innings to break open a 4-4 game.

Brewer was led by Matt Pushard with a double, two singles and two RBIs and Jacob Currier with three singles and two RBIs. Kyle St. Thomas added two singles and two RBIs, and John Mushlit had two singles and an RBI.

Orono’s Nate Reese doubled.

At Hampden, Hampden earned a berth in the championship round while Hermon will play on Tuesday against the winner of Monday’s game between Holbrook and Old Town. All games are at 5:30 p.m.
