ST. DAVID, Maine — A local man escaped injury Thursday night when the powered paraglider he was flying crashed into trees, leaving him dangling about 50 feet off the ground.

Luke Beaulieu was rescued from his precarious perch by Madawaska firefighters and emergency medical personnel, who were assisted by a local tree service and a high-angle rescue team from the Edmundston (New Brunswick) Fire Department, Madawaska police Officer Matthew Derosier said Friday.

According to Derosier, the incident happened about 8:30 p.m. near the glider rider’s home along U.S. Route 1. He said Beaulieu and his family still were working to remove the aircraft Friday afternoon. It was not immediately clear if the glider was damaged in the crash.

Attempts to reach Beaulieu for comment Friday afternoon were not successful.
