ORONO, Maine — Five teams that won at least 19 games last season will be among the University of Maine men’s ice hockey team’s nonleague opponents this season.

Headlining that list will be the University of Minnesota-Duluth, which went 25-10-6 and ousted Maine 5-2 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before being eliminated by eventual national champion Boston College 4-0 in the quarterfinals.

Maine will face 2011 NCAA champion UMD in the opening round at the 13th annual Florida College Classic in Estero, Fla., on Friday, Dec. 28.

The Black Bears then will face either Cornell (19-9-7) or Ferris State (26-12-5) the next night.

Ferris State reached the NCAA championship game in April where it lost to Boston College 4-1 while Cornell made it to the NCAA quarterfinals where it was ousted by Ferris State 2-1.

Maine will host Quinnipiac (20-14-6) from the ECAC Hockey League to open the season on Oct. 6 in Orono before entertaining the University of New Brunswick for an exhibition the next night.

UNB has won three of the last six Canadian Interuniversity Sport national championships and was a semifinalist last season.

Maine will play a two-game set against Mercyhurst (20-16-4) from Atlantic Hockey on Jan. 4-5 with the first game being played at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland and the second being in Orono.

The Black Bears will face CCHA member Notre Dame (19-18-3), which will join Hockey East beginning with the 2013-14 season, in the opening round of the Ice Breaker Tournament in Kansas City, Mo., on Oct. 12 before facing either Atlantic Hockey team Army (4-23-7) or WCHA team Nebraska-Omaha (14-18-6) the next night.

Maine will also host St. Lawrence University (14-19-3) from the ECAC for a two-game set in Orono on Oct. 19-20.

The Black Bears, who were 23-14-3 a year ago and reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2006-2007 season, will play 27 Hockey East games including three apiece against NCAA Tournament teams BC, Boston University and UMass Lowell.

Maine opens its Hockey East campaign with a two-game set at Providence on Oct. 26-27 before they return to host Boston College on Nov. 2 and New Hampshire on Nov. 4.

Boston College has won three of the last five national championships and Boston University captured the 2008-2009 title.
