SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Three men were arrested early Tuesday morning after they assaulted and robbed another man, according to police.
Authorities were sent to the 1000 block of Broadway just after midnight, according to South Portland police Lt. Frank Clark, after calls came in reporting a man had been assaulted and was yelling for help.
Officers quickly found a vehicle containing Mekonnen Berhe, 19, a Portland transient, Raoul Tshiyuka, 19, of Portland and John Kanda, 19, of South Portland and stopped it at the intersection of Broadway and Huntress Avenue, Clark said.
Police found $500 worth of suspected crack cocaine in the vehicle during their investigation.
Clark said that this was not a random incident as the 28-year-old victim is a person known to the suspects.
“When the victim fled from the assault, the male suspects followed, ultimately further assaulting the victim and taking some of his belongings,” which included a cellphone and a backpack, Clark said. It was unclear if police were able to recover the stolen belongings.
Berhe, Tshiyuka and Kanda all were booked into the Cumberland County Jail, Clark said. Berhe faces charges of robbery, aggravated assault and trafficking in scheduled drugs, while Tshiyuka and Kanda are looking at charges of robbery and aggravated assault.
The case remains under investigation. The victim did not require medical treatment.
