ROCKLAND, Maine — After more than three hours of closed-door meetings with its attorney and then among its own members, the Regional School Unit 13 board agreed Tuesday night to interview another candidate for its superintendent job.

Board Chairwoman Tess Kilgour said the candidate to be interviewed is a different one than three previous candidates that the full board has met with during the search process.

“We are working diligently to find the best superintendent for the district that we possibly can,” Kilgour said.

Two weeks ago, interim Superintendent Neal Guyer announced he no longer was a finalist. And last week, a former member of the Southbridge, Mass., school board, David DiGregorio, said that RSU 13 had been asking questions the previous week on that district’s superintendent, Eric Ely.

RSU 13 has declined to publicize the names of candidates, citing state confidentiality law.

Kilgour said no date has been set for when it will interview the next candidate.

Guyer initially agreed to remain as interim superintendent through June 30 but Kilgour said that the board last week reached an agreement with him for him to continue in the post through Friday. She said the board then will talk with him to see if he would remain in the post until a selection is made for a long-term superintendent.

Former Superintendent Judy Lucarelli announced in November she would be leaving the next month. Guyer has served as interim superintendent for the past seven months.

The board met for more than an hour with attorney Daniel Rose of Portland on a legal matter related to the superintendent search. The board then recessed briefly before going back in to discuss the superintendent search.

Kilgour said she believes there are 15 to 20 applications filed for the RSU 13 post and the search committee was presented nine names from the Maine School Management Association, which had been working for the board. The search committee forwarded five names to the full board and three have been interviewed.
