MONROE, Maine — Police have arrested a California duo whom officials believe are responsible for a recent spate of Waldo County motor vehicle and home burglaries.

Paul Munster, 37, of Aptos, Calif., and Laura Petty, 34, of Santa Cruz, Calif., were staying in a home on Stream Road in Monroe when police went there the night of Thursday, June 28.

Detective Jason Bosco of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Department was searching for Munster and Petty during the course of a burglary investigation and saw the two flee into the woods behind the home when he arrived, according to a department press release Monday.

Bosco called for a Maine State Police dog, which eventually did find Munster and Petty in the woods near the home.

After police obtained a search warrant for their home, officials found items from the Swanville burglary and the car burglaries in Searsmont. They also found personal items including identification, mail and credit cards from people around Waldo and Penobscot counties.

Police arrested the pair and charged them with the recent burglaries of two motor vehicles in Searsmont.

Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton said Monday the burglaries remain under investigation. He said police expect Munster and Petty to be linked to additional criminal activity.

“We believe that they basically stole their way across the country,” he said.
