They’re coming for you. And they won’t stop until they grab all of your health flags.
Zombies abound during Run for Your Lives ( runforyourlives.com), a 5K obstacle course that tests your mettle against the forces of the undead. Unlike a real zombie apocalypse where the stakes would be life and getting your brain eaten, here the only goals are to get some exercise, win prizes and enjoy a faux zombieland.
Before each race, all competitors are given a flag belt that represents health. The objective here is to get to the finish line while retaining at least one of those flags. All zombies have to do is get those flags, though they’re not allowed to do anything but grab at them (i.e. no physical contact allowed).
In addition to dealing with hoards of the undead, racers will also have to climb, crawl and wade their ways to victory. Medals are awarded to first, second and third place finishers in four age divisions. Everyone who participates gets a Warwear T-shirt, racing bib, a free beer, admission to the apocalypse party and free zombie survival training.
There are ten races scheduled in the 2012 season: Austin, Baltimore, Denver, Indianapolis, Orlando, Pittsburgh, San Diego/Los Angeles, Seattle/Portland, St. Louis and Toronto. It costs $77 ($87 after a cutoff date) to run for your life or $32 to watch from the protection of a zombie-proof safe zone.
