AUGUSTA, Maine — A Michigan official who served as conservation commissioner in Maine during the 1980s and ’90s is coming back to the state.

Ed Meadows will be deputy commissioner of operations and administration in the newly merged Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry.

Walt Whitcomb, commissioner-designee for the new department, announced Meadows’ appointment Friday.

Meadows was commissioner of what was then Maine’s Conservation Department from 1988 to 1995 during Gov. John McKernan’s administration. He’s also a former director of the Maine Bureau of Public Lands.

Meadows was most recently a senior executive with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
