ELLSWORTH, Maine — One motorist is dead and three others were hospitalized after a car and a truck pulling a camper collided around 5:30 p.m. Friday on Route 3.
Several witnesses reported the car’s driver repeatedly crossed the yellow line before colliding head-on with the Chevy S10 near the intersection of Happytown Farm Road, said Ellsworth police Sgt. Glenn Moshier. The car was totaled and Moshier said the driver died in the crash.
The occupants of the truck, two grandparents and their granddaughter, were brought to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Ellsworth Police and Fire departments, as well as Hancock County EMS, went to the scene. Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to pry open the car’s door, where they discovered the driver dead inside.
By 6 p.m., Ellsworth Officer Chad Wilmot was reconstructing the accident. Police still were trying to identify the car’s driver.
Traffic was stalled in both directions on what is known as the Bucksport Road, which is State Route 3 and U.S. Route 1. Around 5:45 p.m., motorists were instructed to turn around. Moshier expected the road to be closed for up to two hours.
