ORONO – Louise B. Libby, 84, passed away Wednesday, June 27, 2012, surrounded by family at Orono Commons as a rainbow appeared in the sky. She remained courageous and strong throughout her illness. She was born Sept. 29, 1927, in Vintondale, Pa., daughter of the late Alfred and Harriet (Wade) Burge.
She grew up in Gearhartsville, Pa., with her five siblings. Louise first worked at Penn State in the Registrar’s Office. In 1951 Louise married Edward F. Libby in Medford, Mass. The couple moved to Bucksport and then to Orono, where she worked for Dean Mark Shibles in the Department of Continuing Education at the University of Maine before leaving to start a family. She managed the floral department at Doug’s Shop and Save in the 1980s. A longtime member of Church of Universal Fellowship, Orono, Louise served in her church as a Sunday school teacher, on Green Thumb Sales, and in Alliance as president. She organized and worked on many Daffodil Luncheons and receptions to honor church members. Louise was a past president of Orono Garden Club, and a member Orono Jaycees, Eastern Maine Orchid Society and Orono Women’s Club, where she served on the community calendar committee to raise money for scholarships. A lifelong learner, Louise took 10 courses at Penobscot Valley Senior College, earning a certificate of philomath. She was also involved in the Orono community, working as a room mother, doing weights and measures, and in the greenhouse at Asa Adams School. She worked at the polls and at voter registration, as well as chairing Girl Scout cookie sales. Louise had a talent for horticulture and filled her home and yard with plants and flowers. A person of many interests, she enjoyed following and discussing current events and local history. She loved cooking, decorating her home, and attending concerts at Collins Center for the Arts.
A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Louise is survived by her daughters, Karen L. Sebastian and husband, Steven Sebastian, of West Chesterfield, N.H., Joan E. Libby of Nantucket, Mass., Barbara A. DeAngelis of Henniker, N.H., and Betty J. Libby of Portland; three grandsons, Sean Murphy of Hillsborough, N.H., Matthew Murphy and Nicholas Brown of Portland; two granddaughters, Samantha Dimastrantonio of Portland and Kendall Sebastian of West Chesterfield, N.H.; two great-granddaughters, Hailey Dimastrantonio and Layla Brown; and a sister, Jane Caggiano of California. She was predeceased by her husband, Edward F. Libby, in 1987, after 36 years of marriage; her two brothers, Elmer Burge and William Burge; and her two sisters, Marie Fedak and Buelah Muir.
A celebration of Louise’s life will be held 11 a.m. Monday, July 2, at Church of Universal Fellowship with the Rev. Lorna Grenfell, celebrant. There will be a reception immediately after the service. Interment will be afterward at Riverside Cemetery, Orono.
