BANGOR, Maine — An employee at Shaw’s grocery store on Main Street saw a young man take a bottle of alcohol off the shelf Wednesday night and then hide it by putting it down his pants, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said.

Nicholas Bailey, 23, of Bucksport, who was out on probation, walked into the bathroom with the concealed bottle of rum at about 9:25 p.m., the sergeant said.

Bailey was found with the alcohol and charged with theft and violating his probation. He was taken to the Penobscot County Jail and remained there on Thursday.

Bailey was convicted of violating conditions of his release four times in the last year, according to court listings printed in the Bangor Daily News. He also was convicted in August 2010 of burglary to a motor vehicle and refusing to submit to arrest or detention.
