Bangor looking for ambassadors to recruit businesses

BANGOR, Maine — City officials are looking to recruit a few business owners to recruit more business owners to the Queen City.

The idea for Bangor Ambassadors, a program formalized through Mobilize Eastern Maine, came from a collaborative effort by Bangor City Councilor Ben Sprague, Bangor Business Development Specialist Tanya Pereira, and Elizabeth Sutherland, co-owner of Sutherland Weston Marketing Communications and chairwoman of Mobilize Eastern Maine.

“Basically what we are trying to do is put a personal touch on recruitment,” said Sprague. “The Bangor region has to differentiate itself, and one way to do so is by being welcoming, encouraging, helpful and polite.

“It is always difficult to get people to move north, but there are so many wonderful things happening here that if we can personally explain it to people it might make it more likely for them to come.”

It’s not just a service created to handle recruitment, its other emphasis is on providing information and answers to questions.

“Yes, the ultimate goal is to bring more businesses to town, but this is a way to better guide people around by matching them up with similar business owners,” said Pereira. “That’s why we’ve recruited more than 50 people from all different walks and stages of life to be ambassadors.”

But they’re looking for even more ambassadors.

The idea is to be able to match people up to better address the concerns and questions of prospective business professionals and their families over issues such as child care, education, social services, nightlife, amenities and health services in the area.

The program is also envisioned as a tool for local businesses — including everything from independent and small businesses to hospitals, colleges and nonprofits — to use to recruit employees.

“It’s all volunteer and it costs no money, and it’s another way to showcase Bangor and all it has to offer,” said Sprague.

To find out more about the program, businesses and prospective ambassadors can contact Sprague, Pereira or Sutherland, respectively, by calling 852-1405, 992-4236, or 945-9999, or by emailing them at bemjamin.sprague@bangormaine.gov, tanya.pereira@bangormaine.gov or esutherland@sutherlandweston.com.
