Music has always been a big part of Dale Overlock’s life.

For the past decade, it’s been a conduit for his ministry. Now music is taking the 31-year-old Newburgh resident on the road.

Overlock and his acoustic guitar are traveling as far afield as North Carolina and Florida — and soon Tennessee and Oklahoma. He’s touring in support of his debut solo album “Meet Me Here,” released last June by Tate Music Group in Oklahoma City.

While he’s working on gaining name recognition, Overlock is seeking primarily to get God’s word out there.

“When you put ministry first over finances, you can take a loss in some areas and hope to make it up in other areas,” Overlock explained. “I’m fortunate to go out and share Jesus with them.”

Overlock is a full-time musician now. When he’s not on the road, he’s a stay-at-home dad to 3-year-old Iris and 2-month-old Owen. The hardest adjustment for him is being away from his wife, Jill, and their children.

“My wife has always been at my concerts in New England, so it’s hard being on the road alone,” he said. “Hopefully it will get to the point when I can bring them with me.”

Overlock grew up in a musical family and played guitar and sang in a high-school rock cover band. He turned to Christian rock in 2001, leading worship at Nealley’s Corner Church in Hampden and playing in a Christian rock band on weekends.

When that long-time group disbanded, Overlock sent off a demo of his original songs to various music companies. Tate responded positively, leading to his album’s release.

“I’ve been writing original music my whole life,” he said. “I’m constantly writing. Some of the songs on the album had been around, and some were new.”

While he’s writing songs for his next album, Overlock is busy touring. “I’m working at getting my name established in new places,” he said. “The response has been amazing. Everybody’s been great.”
