WINSLOW, Maine — Jake and Juliann Lapierre, brother and sister karate students of Winslow were the top fundraisers at the Battle of Maine Martial Arts Championships for the third consecutive year. Jake and Juliann raised $1,666 through donations from area businesses and individuals, surpassing their goal of $1,500 to support pediatric health care in central, eastern and northern Maine.

The 32nd annual Battle of Maine, a prestigious annual competitive event for karate enthusiasts across New England, was held this spring in Winslow. The event raised more than $5,000 for EMHS Healthcare Charities Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, bringing the organization’s cumulative grand total this year to more than $53,000.

“Battle of Maine is proud to support EMHS Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals because we know the importance of having excellent quality health care for children that’s close to home,” said event organizer Mark Huard.

“These kids have done a great job. We are all so very proud of what they have done to help kids in need,” Huard said.
