BANGOR, Maine — The drive-thru lane will remain, but instead of burgers and fries, customers will be getting cash at the former McDonald’s restaurant on Main Street.

Penobscot County Federal Credit Union is moving its branch at 1 Merchants Plaza to 466 Main St.

“It’s primarily being done for location, given the emphasis the city is placing on that area and all the activity going on there,” said Steven Baillargeon, the credit union’s president and CEO. “It provides much greater visibility for us as well.”

Baillargeon said he hopes to have the move completed in three months and hold a grand opening in the fall.

“There are very few banking institutions, especially credit unions, in that area, so it’s a very good location for us,” Baillargeon said of the new location.

Penobscot County FCU has three locations: Merchants Plaza in Bangor, the main office in Old Town on Main Street, and a Bridge Street branch in West Enfield.

The new location will feature a new lobby and teller line, a drive-up teller lane, a night depository box, and a new 24-hour automated teller machine.

“The primary thing for us is credit union members have been really pushing for us to put in an ATM,” Baillargeon said. “Our members have been asking us to do something about better accessibility, so this will go a long way toward that.”

The deal has been in the works since early spring, said Baillargeon, after the property was purchased by local businessman and real estate agent Dave Sleeper.

Penobscot County FCU began operations in 1968 and has grown into a full-service financial institution that has more than 7,400 members and $46 million in assets.
