Car clips utility pole, sends two people to hospital

By Ryan McLaughlin, BDN Staff

WINTERPORT, Maine — Two people escaped major injury Sunday afternoon when a car struck a utility pole on Route 1A, according to police.

Charles Hunt, 43, and Laurie Whitney, 37, both of Searsport, were heading southbound just after 2 p.m. when Hunt allegedly fell asleep, left the roadway and struck the pole, snapping it in half, according to Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy Ben Seekins, who investigated the crash, said Hunt and Whitney were headed home from the Bangor area.

Hunt and Whitney were taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

The Ford Edge that Hunt was driving likely is demolished, according to Seekins.
