Wesley man killed in Route 9 accident near Crawford

By Tom Walsh, BDN Staff

CRAWFORD, Maine — A Wesley man died Monday morning after a one-vehicle accident on Route 9 near the Washington County community of Crawford.

Alvah Hawkins, 75, of Wesley was eastbound headed toward Calais just before 7 a.m. when his vehicle left the roadway for reasons unknown, according to Maine State Police Sgt. Jeff Ingemi.

“He overcorrected and wound up coming across both lanes and struck an embankment,” Ingemi said. “He had head trauma.”

State police confirmed later Monday afternoon that Hawkins died. He had been airlifted by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

Alcohol and speed were not considered factors, Ingemi said. Hawkins was not wearing a seat belt. The vehicle, a 2000 Ford Taurus, had significant damage.

The accident did not close the busy highway.
