SEBEC – Frederick Woodward Burow, 86, husband of Hilda M. Burow, died June 23, 2012, at Maine Veterans Home, Bangor. He was born Sept. 27, 1925, in Stamford, Conn., the son of Frederick and Gertrude Burow.
During World War II, Fred enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. After his service he worked with his father on steamfitting and construction jobs. He was active in auto racing with United Stock Car Racing Corp. He worked as a welder, heavy equipment operator and mechanic as a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers in the New England states and in New York. He also worked at Electric Boat, Groton, Conn., on the nuclear refit of the USS Nautilus, as well as other missile sites in Maine and New York. After buying a home in Sebec, he settled happily in a small Maine town. He was one of the founding members of Sebec Fire Department and served devotedly for 40 years.
Fred is survived by his wife of 61 years, Hilda of Sebec; and two daughters, Romantha and Freida. He was predeceased by a son, Freddy Burow.
