Maine Turnpike Authority to hold more York County meetings on toll hike proposal

By Matthew Stone, BDN Staff

The Maine Turnpike Authority will hold two more public meetings in York County to discuss its proposal to raise tolls in order to generate an additional $26 million in revenue annually.

The meetings will take place July 9, at the American Legion Hall in York and July 11, in the auditorium of Wells High School. Both meetings will start at 6:30 p.m.

The turnpike authority this week is finishing an initial series of three public meetings about the proposed toll increase. Meetings were held Tuesday in Auburn and Wednesday in Portland. A third meeting was scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Saco City Hall.

The turnpike authority, which operates the 109-mile toll highway that stretches from Kittery to Augusta, is proposing a toll increase option that includes a $1 toll hike at the York toll plaza, 75-cent hikes in New Gloucester and West Gardiner, and 50-cent raises at tolls in Gray and Wells.

The turnpike authority proposal also would raise the per-mile rate to 8 cents from the current 6.7-cent rate.
