WHITEFIELD, Maine — Regional School Unit 12 in central Maine has hired Alan Hawkins of South Portland as its interim superintendent. Hawkins will hold the post while the district’s board of directors conducts a search this summer for a permanent superintendent.
Hawkins, who retired from the Cape Elizabeth school system in 2010, was superintendent in Wiscasset from 2002 to 2005. Wiscasset schools are now part of RSU 12, but in recent months some residents there and on Westport Island have expressed a desire to withdraw from the district.
Board Chairwoman Hilary Holm said in a press release that one of Hawkins’ primary goals will be to help the district implement a long-range plan, which emphasizes professional development for teachers and administrators and peer observations in order to increase student achievement. Hawkins specializes in standards-based teaching and learning and customized learning. Holm said Hawkins’ hiring was approved unanimously by the board of directors.
“He has strong people skills, which will be an asset as we meet with Wiscasset regarding their continued membership in the RSU,” said Holms. “Those same skills will help us continue to pursue our efforts to improve teaching and leadership for the benefit of all students.”
RSU 12 serves the Sheepscot Valley towns of Alna, Chelsea, Palermo, Somerville, Westport Island, Whitefield, Windsor and Wiscasset.
Hawkins will begin a one-year term as superintendent on July 1 but plans to work several days between now and then. Hawkins replaces Superintendent Gregory Potter, who has resigned effective June 30 to take a job in RSU 19 in the Newport area.
