Several racewalkers from Maine turned in strong performances in national track and field meets over the weekend.

Graduating seniors Katie Flanders from Gorham High School and Abby Dunn from Edward Little in Auburn, both walking for the Maine Racewalkers Club, finished fourth and fifth, respectively, at the USA Junior National Championships at Bloomington, Ind.

They both earned a slot on the 2012 USA Junior Track and Field Team and recorded their second all-American awards of the season.

Flanders walked her first 10,000-meter distance in an impressive 58 minutes, 4 seconds for fourth place, followed by Dunn in 59:04.

Dunn is no stranger to being on the USA Junior team, and she recently competed for the U.S. in Russia in the Junior World Cup Championships.

Nicole Court-Menendez of Lewiston also raced to a ninth-place finish.

At the New Balance Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Greensboro, N.C., Lisbon High junior Benjamin Kates finished second in the mile.

Kates, in an intense sprint in the last 200 meters, finished four seconds behind junior Geraldo Flores from Pharr, Texas. Messalonskee of Oakland sophomore Peter Littlefield from Sidney and Bonny Eagle of Standish sophomore Matthew Youland from Buxton finished third and fourth, respectively. Kates, Littlefield and Youland each earned All-American status.
