BERWICK, Maine — An ATV accident at 12:46 p.m. on Saturday, June 16, resulted in serious injuries to the vehicle’s operator who was transported by air to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

According to Berwick police, Edward Leland, 66, of South Berwick, Maine was riding his 2003 Honda ATV in a remote area of Berwick near Hatfield Pond and Sawtell Road when he fell from the vehicle. Leland received serious injuries to his back and chest.

Due to the remote location of the accident, LifeFlight of Maine was called and a helicopter was immediately dispatched to a landing zone near the accident.

Berwick police provided first aid and were joined shortly after by Berwick Fire and American Medical Response. The Maine Warden Service will be conducting a full investigation into the accident.

Leland was wearing safety equipment for riding off-road vehicles.
