Portland police investigating stabbing of homeless man

PORTLAND, Maine — Portland police are investigating a weekend altercation that sent one homeless man to jail and another to the hospital with stab wounds.

Jeremiah Schaffner, 21, turned himself in to Portland police Sunday and was charged with elevated aggravated assault after an early Saturday morning fight with Shawn Buck, 35, according to police. Both men are described in a police announcement Monday as transients.

Buck allegedly was stabbed in the abdomen and chest during the incident and was transported to Maine Medical Center where he underwent surgery, according to police.

The fight took place in a wooded area near West Commercial Street. Schaffner remains at the Cumberland County jail, according to police.

Investigators are urging anyone who witnessed or has information regarding the incident to contact the police department at 874-8533.
