NAPLES, Maine — A Bridgton man was taken to the hospital early Saturday after leading police on a brief pursuit before crashing, according to police.

Deputies attempted to stop John Allen, 31, of Bridgton for erratic driving just before 1 a.m. Saturday, Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce said in a statement.

Allen, who was driving a 2006 Dodge Magnum, started to pull over but then accelerated to speeds approaching 80 miles per hour, according to Joyce.

After going approximately about three-quarters of a mile, Allen lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a telephone pole.

Allen was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston for non-life threatening injuries, according to Joyce. A passenger, Jeremy McLeod, 31, was taken to Bridgton Memorial Hospital for a foot injury and later released.

The accident remains under investigation and Allen will likely face charges in the crash, Joyce said.
